Every job starts with an engagement roll. An engagement roll is a fortune roll that sets the crew’s starting situation.

This is a single roll for the entire crew – nominate 1 person to roll the dice.

To make an engagement roll:

1. Start with 1D, for luck.
2. Add +1D for any advantages (vulnerable or weak target, outside aid, advance prep).
3. Subtract -1D for any disadvantages (strong target, outside interference, unprepared crew).
4. Roll & read the single highest result:
   • 6: Controlled. Everything is going according to plan
   • 4-5: Risky. The crew is up against an immediate problem
   • 1-3: Desperate. Things have already gone off the rails </aside>
